Micks Blog 5th April 2014

So The Island Lake is finally open for the 2014 season and I arrived to kick things of with my two children Fin and Georgia as it was the start of the school holidays. The first week we had 6 anglers in total who hadn’t fished the lake before. They all opted to fish as pairs from the double swims. I opted to fish from my cabin for simplicity as I had the children. The weather was good, temperatures rising and light winds. The carp were well awake with fish rolling in most areas. The double swims that were occupied were 3 & 4, 5 & 6 and 10 & 12 so that was a good percentage of the lake covered. I was quite confident that fish would be covered. Allan in swim 12 was first off the mark with a 40lb mirror. For the first couple of nights I had fish rolling around my baited spots so I was sure it was just a matter of time. Well my first fish of 2014 ┬ácame on the Monday night in the way of a 50lb common. Its a great feeling when you get your first fish of the year and a good one at that. The weather was sunny and warm in the day but cold at night at around 4 degrees. By Wednesday only one more fish had come out – a 35lb mirror to Allan in swim 12. But with the amount of fish showing at night I was hoping for more before the end of the week. And in the next 48 hours a few more did. Allan added 2 more to his tally with a 43lb and 32lb mirror. Andy in swim 5 had his first fish and a personal best at that with a 45lb common so well done to him. I also managed a 45lb mirror from the same spot as I caught the common.

On Friday, it was time to set the traps for the last time for this week to see what happens and it was quite a productive night. Andy and Trevor in 5 & 6 had 2 more fish – Trevor a 36lb mirror and Andy smashed his PB again with a 56lb mirror. Allan had 2 more – a 32lb and 50lb mirror and I also had a 42lb. Not a bad opening week after all with 11 fish out.
